Australian Shepherd Grooming

The Mud Puppies Way

We love Aussies of all sizes – standards, minis and toys! Our double-coat grooming experts tailor their grooming services to your Australian Shepherd’s size, coat and needs.

An Australian Shepherd enjoying being groomed

Three Sizes, One Gorgeous Coat

Regardless of your Aussie’s size, they all share the same dual-layered coat. That coat will need de-shedding and proper grooming to keep your dog comfortable – and to keep their coat healthy and attractive. Australian shepherds shed moderately year-round, with heavier shedding in the spring and fall.

IMPORTANT: Never Shave an Australian Shepherd!

Aussie Grooming

Our groomers have been taking expert care of Austin’s most beloved Australian Shepherds for many years. Whether you have a mini, toy or standard Aussie, we’re here to help keep their coats beautiful and their days comfortable – no matter what the Texas heat throws at us.

Aussie Coat Care

Mini and toy Aussies have the same needs as standards – just scaled down to their size. Their coats are also proportionally thicker due to their smaller size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I shave my Australian shepherd?

No. Like all double-coated breeds, shaving an Australian shepherd damages the coat and disrupts their natural temperature regulation. Mud Puppies uses professional deshedding techniques that manage the undercoat without harming the weather-resistant topcoat, keeping your Aussie comfortable year-round.

How often should an Australian shepherd be groomed?

Australian shepherds should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks, with seasonal deshedding in spring and fall when shedding is heaviest. Frequency depends on your dog’s lifestyle and at-home upkeep. Regular grooming keeps the double coat healthy and prevents tangling in the feathered areas on the legs, chest, and behind the ears.

Is grooming different for miniature and toy Australian shepherds?

The grooming approach is the same across all three sizes at Mud Puppies. Standard, miniature, and toy Australian shepherds share the same double coat type and grooming needs. The difference is scale and time required, which is reflected in breed-specific pricing for each size.
