Golden Retriever Grooming

The Mud Puppies Way

Caring for a golden retriever’s coat is all about keeping shedding under control. Their double coats make for a lot of maintenance, but when you get your beloved golden retriever de-shedded regularly, not only will they be more comfortable in warm weather, but your home will also be noticeably cleaner!

The Golden Retriever Coat: As Beautiful as it is Demanding

Golden retrievers have a two-layer coat: A soft undercoat and a water-resistant outer coat. With Austin’s climate, you’ve probably noticed moderate shedding all year, with a sharp increase in shedding a couple times a year.

Brushing Doesn’t Cut it. Mud Puppies Does.

Professional grooming every 8-12 weeks helps keep your retriever’s coat healthy and beautiful year-round. Professional deshedding at either of Mud Puppies’ North Austin locations removes what home brushing cannot. It also prevents hot spots and skin irritation. A full groom at Mud Puppies means coat trimming, breed-appropriate shampoo and conditioner plus a thorough blow dry to lift and separate their undercoat. We also include nail dremeling, teeth brushing and regular ear cleaning to care for their floppy ears.

At-Home Golden Retriever Coat Care

  • Focus behind ears, under legs & around tail

IMPORTANT: Never Shave a Golden Retriever!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I shave my golden retriever to reduce shedding?

No. Mud Puppies never recommends shaving a golden retriever. Their double coat regulates body temperature in both heat and cold. Shaving damages the coat structure and disrupts this natural insulation. Professional deshedding treatments are the safe, effective alternative to manage shedding.

How can I reduce my golden retriever’s shedding?

Professional deshedding treatments at Mud Puppies, combined with consistent brushing at home, make the biggest difference. Focus behind the ears, under the legs, and around the tail where mats form first. Seasonal deshedding treatments during the spring and fall heavy-shed periods will help significantly.

How often should a golden retriever be professionally groomed?

Golden retrievers should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks, with deshedding treatments during heavy shedding seasons in spring and fall. Frequency depends on your dog’s lifestyle and how much brushing you do at home. Regular grooming prevents hot spots, removes loose undercoat, and keeps the coat healthy.
