Goldendoodle Grooming
The Mud Puppies Way
At Mud Puppies, we get Doodles. Not only do our groomers understand the intricacies of grooming these beloved breeds, we also know just how important they are to you.
Goldendoodles can have somewhat high-maintenance needs, but we’re experienced with all doodle coat types, and you can rid yourself of a lot of the burden by trusting our gentle, empathetic and talented goldendoodle groomers.

The Goldendoodle Coat’s Archenemy: Matting
Poodle genetics keep your goldendoodle from excessive shedding, but they also have continuous hair growth. Preventing matting is the top priority for goldendoodles. Without regular grooming, matting can happen before you know it – especially behind their ears, under their legs and around the collar. This pulls on skin, traps moisture and causes irritation that your goldendoodle can’t tell you about!
THREE COAT TYPES
Flat | Wavy | Curly
Wavy and curly are most prone to matting!
Your Goldendoodle’s Grooming Needs
At Mud Puppies, we’ve been grooming Austin’s goldendoodles for years. We always begin with a thorough brush-out and mat assessment. We’re happy to groom based on your preferred style: teddy bear, puppy cut, or a custom cut.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should a goldendoodle be professionally groomed?
Goldendoodles should be professionally groomed every 6-8 weeks at Mud Puppies. Their poodle genetics mean the coat grows continuously, and wavy or curly coats mat quickly without consistent maintenance. Going longer than 8 weeks significantly increases matting risk.
What is the best haircut for a goldendoodle?
The teddy bear cut and puppy cut are the most popular goldendoodle styles at Mud Puppies. Both keep the coat manageable while maintaining the classic doodle look. Your groomer will discuss options based on your doodle’s coat type, lifestyle, and how much brushing you do at home.
My goldendoodle is matted. What should I do?
Do not try to cut out mats at home! Bring them to Mud Puppies as soon as possible. Matting pulls on the skin and traps moisture, causing discomfort and irritation. Depending on severity, we may be able to work out the mats or may recommend a shorter cut to start fresh. We always discuss before proceeding.
When should I start grooming my goldendoodle puppy?
Schedule your goldendoodle puppy’s first professional groom around 12-16 weeks of age. Starting early is essential for doodles because it builds positive grooming associations before the adult coat comes in. Puppies who start young are much easier to groom throughout their lives.
